A .docx is a zip archive of XML describing paragraphs, runs of formatted text, tables and pictures. This tool opens that archive, reads the style rules the document inherits from, works out where every line breaks at the width of the page, and writes the result as PDF text objects. That last part is the difference that matters: the output holds letters, not a screenshot of letters, so you can search it, select it, and a twenty-page document lands at a couple of hundred kilobytes.
