Why convert .docx to PDF?

A .docx file looks different depending on which application opens it, which fonts are installed, and which operating system renders it. A PDF freezes the layout: every recipient sees the same page, whether they open it on Windows, macOS, a phone or a Chromebook. That makes PDF the format of choice for resumes, contracts, invoices, assignments and anything else you send outside your own machine.

Most .docx-to-PDF converters upload your file to a server, run the conversion remotely, and send the result back. That means a round trip over the internet, a file-size cap (usually 10–50 MB on free tiers), and a copy of your document sitting on someone else's infrastructure. Which .docx files work?

Any file saved in the Office Open XML format (.docx) — the default for Word 2007 and later, Google Docs' “Download as .docx” option, and LibreOffice Writer's Save As. If your file ends in .docx, it works here.

The older binary .doc format (Word 97–2003) is not supported. Open it in any word processor, save as .docx, and convert that. The tool tells you if you accidentally drop a .doc file.

What is a .docx file?
A .docx is the default file format for Microsoft Word 2007 and later. It is actually a zip archive containing XML files that describe text, formatting, images and layout. Google Docs and LibreOffice Writer also save in .docx format, so most modern word-processing documents are .docx files even when created outside Microsoft Office.
Can I convert an older .doc file?
Not directly — .doc is the legacy binary format from Word 97–2003. Open the file in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and use Save As to save it as .docx first, then convert the .docx here. The tool warns you if you drop a .doc instead of failing silently.
Is the conversion free?

Does the PDF keep my formatting?
Yes. Headings, bold, italic, underline, colours, highlights, alignment, indents, lists, tables, images, hyperlinks, page breaks and margins all carry over.
